Two of the best countries in the history of rugby are playing in the championship game of the 2023 Rugby World Cup today. In the nine previous Rugby World Cup, New Zealand and South Africa have combined to win six overall and the last four in general. New Zealand has three wins, same for South Africa, who have only played one time previously in the championship match. That came back in 1995 when South Africa won its first Rugby World Cup. Whichever country comes out on top today will break the tie and become the best team in the history of the Rugby World Cup with a fourth win.

Last year New Zealand (20-18) won in the semifinals against South Africa to advance to the championship match that the team won (34-17) in dominant fashion over Australia.

During the Knockout Stage South Africa was a little suspect, winning both matches by just one point. It survived a thriller against France (29-28) and then a rock fight against England (16-15), which won the third-place game yesterday.

For New Zealand in the Knockout Stage, it earned a win over Ireland (28-24) and then dominated Argentina (44-6) in the semifinals. That momentum coupled with defeating South Africa in the semifinals last year might be the recipe for New Zealand to win its fourth championship match at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
